A technical exploration into the expressive possibilities of Soundpainting and its potential to craft emotionally resonant compositions ending in a journey through a showcase of dreams to spark reflections on the human condition.

Day 1: Learn the basic Soundpainting gestures through a performative approach that ensures a rapid understanding of contemporary compositional concepts and builds confident fluency in the language, allowing each performer to develop their expressive potential to its fullest. There is no universal way of teaching as this lecture is defined by the group's quality and their own work dynamic as professional artists.

Day 2: After establishing these foundations, we will examine a set of gestures specifically oriented toward acting and their interaction with musical material. This phase focuses on how physical intention, dramatic presence, and performative timing integrate with sound and music to generate coherent structures for real‑time composition. Through guided practice, performers will develop a precise understanding of how their actions influence the musical environment to create basic structures for contemporary musical improv.

Day 3: Explore the concept "dreamlike" as a framework for a long-form performance. This exploration will focus on how altered states, symbolic imagery, and non‑linear logic can inform the performer’s expressive choices and enrich the construction of real‑time compositions. By examining the fluidity, ambiguity, and emotional resonance characteristic of dreamlike experiences, performers will develop strategies to translate these qualities into clear performative actions that express the condition of being a human.

Pedro Larraya is an Argentine improviser with over eight years of experience as a Soundpainting conductor. He trained under the guidance of Soundpainting’s creator, Walter Thompson, in the direction of contemporary multidisciplinary compositions.

He has taught performers in non‑formal institutions, universities, and festivals across five countries, and contributed to the official Spanish translation of the Universal Soundpainting Dictionary. He is one of the two co-founders of the Soundpainting Lab Ensemble and has taken part in the most recent Think Tanks—the global Soundpainting gathering—in 2023 and 2024. He will soon coordinate the global meeting Flying Fish Tank, where leading figures of the Soundpainting community will convene to discuss his work on the acting discipline. He has also been invited to Vassar College in New York for the 2026 Think Tank with his research project, “Analysis of Linguistic Symbolism in Performative and Visual Languages through Soundpainting”.

Driven by his background in linguistics, theatrical improvisation, and his curiosity for emerging artistic languages, he continues to expand Soundpainting into new frontiers as a learning tool for performers and educators across all artistic disciplines.
